Stormwind City, Saturday evening.
When reports began spreading through Stormwind that the Shady Lady Tavern had been struck by both an explosion and a shooting, I did what any responsible journalist would do and immediately headed towards the establishment in question, largely in the hope that somebody there would be willing to explain why taverns in this city increasingly resemble active warzones after sunset.
Unfortunately, upon arrival, it quickly became apparent that this was not going to be one of those evenings where one quietly sits down with a witness over a drink and receives a coherent retelling of events. The tavern itself was closed and what few people I could find seemed to pre-occupied to register my presence or answer questions, so I instead made my way to Stormwind City Hall, where members of the guard involved in the response had gathered.
There I spoke with Malwin Ridley, a Private First Class of the Stormwind City Brigade, who confirmed that two members of their unit had been injured during the incident. According to Ridley, the wounded were identified as Lancelot Sanctius and Jim Karpo, both of whom were expected to recover quickly despite the chaos surrounding the attack.
Ridley explained that, based on the information currently available to the guard, the attack had allegedly been carried out by Dark Iron Dwarves. According to his account, armed assailants attacked the tavern and opened fire, adding that this was apparently not the first such incident connected to the location. He stated that tavern staff had informed him that similar assaults had taken place over recent weeks and that the matter was now being treated as an ongoing investigation.
What remains unclear is the motive behind the attacks. When asked directly whether the guard had uncovered any explanation for why the Shady Lady appears to have become a repeated target, Ridley admitted that he did not currently know. At present, there appears to be no confirmed political grievance, criminal demand, or ideological statement attached to the violence, which in some ways makes the entire affair more unsettling than the usual parade of cultists and manifesto enthusiasts Stormwind has become accustomed to.
As though matters were not already sufficiently confusing, the evening also appears to have involved what Ridley himself referred to as a separate “togglecog event.”
During our conversation I mentioned hearing reports that someone at the scene had shouted about “Togglecogs,” a name many readers may unfortunately recognise from previous incidents involving suicidal bombings (the suicidal bit mostly by accident), property damage, and family trees seemingly fuelled entirely by explosives. Ridley stated that he personally did not believe the Togglecogs were connected to the dwarf attack itself, though he confirmed that a gnome had apparently exploded outside the tavern during the wider incident.
At this point, one almost has to admire Stormwind’s ability to layer disasters on top of one another with remarkable efficiency.
Ridley encouraged members of the public to report suspicious behaviour to the city guard, particularly involving individuals matching the descriptions of the attackers. While this is sensible advice, it may also prove somewhat challenging in practice given that some Dark Iron Dwarves, even during perfectly lawful activities, often naturally give the impression that they are moments away from either committing a felony or inventing a new type of cannon.
For now, the investigation remains ongoing, the injured are expected to recover, and the Shady Lady slides up the ranking of Stormwind establishments that have experienced catastrophic violence during what should have been ordinary business hours.
Readers with verified information regarding the incident are encouraged to contact the Stormwind City Brigade and then of course The Lion’s Roar.
