A joint Brigade and Crownwatch force destroyed a suspected Defias base in Westfall on Friday night after a cave raid left one member missing, many others injured and a captain recovering from her wounds.
Specialist Raven Silverdusk of the Stormwind City Brigade said the force captured two suspects during the operation, though he declined to identify them while the investigation remains active. The authorities believe further bases exist, but Silverdusk would not say where they may be or what is known about them.
The raid follows the Brigade’s investigation into several murders, an attack upon the nobleman Benrus Stonehammer, the shooting of an informant and a violent protest near Lion’s Rest. Threatening propaganda and references to the Stonemasons or Defias Brotherhood have appeared across those cases, though the precise organisation and leadership behind the campaign have not been publicly established.
Silverdusk said the Westfall location was discovered through “unexpected intelligence”. He would not identify the source or explain how the information reached the authorities, citing concern after the events of the raid.
According to his account, investigators first searched the ground outside the base and found plants linked to a poison already known to the inquiry. That discovery convinced the force it had reached the correct place and led its members into a cave.
The entrance and early passages appeared deserted. Deeper inside, however, Silverdusk said the cave seemed far larger than expected and carried a perceptible trace of the Void through its walls.
The force’s withdrawal route then became uncertain. Traps placed behind the officers were triggered, though Silverdusk said it was not known whether someone had set them off deliberately or simply stumbled into them. Members of the unit were forced into a narrow section of the cave and ambushed.
One part of the joint force fought Defias members further ahead while undead creatures resembling pig-men attacked from behind. Cultists then entered the cave behind the officers, Silverdusk said, leaving him and several others cut off from their comrades by fire surging from the cavern walls.
“That was where we found out that it was not just a simple group of bandits and terrorists we were up against.”
The fighting caused sections of the cave to give way. Silverdusk said a Defias member detonated explosives he was carrying inside the cavern, worsening the collapse. The force ultimately drove back its attackers and escaped, although one member remains missing. No deaths among the joint force had been confirmed at the time of the interview.
Many members of the force were wounded. Silverdusk said their captain was among the more seriously injured and remains in recovery, but is expected to return to her feet. Crownwatch representatives declined to provide further detail, saying their reports were still being written.
The Brigade’s account has not been independently verified, and neither the captured suspects nor any representative of the group accused of occupying the cave was available to comment. The precise roles of the cultists, undead and reported blood witch also remain unclear.
Silverdusk nevertheless described the blood witch as an ally of the suspected Defias group and said those behind the campaign appeared to command considerable resources. Asked whether the Defias activity had merely concealed some other threat, he rejected the suggestion.
“No. It is them. They simply have allies now.”
The base itself was completely destroyed, depriving the group of whatever supplies remained inside. It is not clear how much was recovered before the collapse, nor whether the two unidentified suspects have provided investigators with useful information.
Residents have again been advised to avoid alleys, travel together where possible and report signs of Defias activity to the Stormwind City Brigade without delay. The search for the missing member and the wider group continues, while Crownwatch’s account of the operation remains pending.
